Primate Labs has announced the release of Geekbench 5. Support for Dark Mode to macOS as well as new CPU and GPU benchmark tests.
Geekbench is a cross-platform processorbenchmark, with a scoring system that separates single-core and multi-core performance,[2][3] and workloads that simulate real-world scenarios. The software benchmark is available for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. Geekbench has also measured GPU performance in areas such as image processing and computer vision since Geekbench 4.[4]

Linus Torvalds, who is the creator and principal developer of the Linux kernel, criticized Geekbench for showing partiality for ARM64 devices and being a bad performance measure of x86-based systems. He called Geekbench as bad a benchmark as Dhrystone, which he and others have ridiculed for years.[5] When version 4.0 of Geekbench was released his comment was, 'Looks much better,'[6] adding that 'you shouldn't treat GB as a 'cross system' benchmark,' [7].

Geekbench, one of the most popular benchmarking applications on Android, has just been updated to version 4.0 — packing a few improvements. These include a new Material Design user interface, improvements to its CPU workload benchmark, and the introduction of the GPU compute workload benchmark…
Geekbench 4’s improved CPU workload benchmark runs sophisticated tests that push a device’s processor to its limits. The app then gives a score for single-core and muti-core performance as well as a breakdown of the tests. The new GPU compute workload benchmark does a similar process but with graphically intense tests.

Benchmark applications such as Geekbench are popular for testing the power of devices and comparing them to others the market. While the true performance of an Android device is more than the scores apps like these provide, Geekbench is useful for collecting data nonetheless. Also, Geekbench archives device scores so when they are run on unannounced devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, we’re able to get an early look.
